Cell phones are the Missing Link in the Fertility Crisis

It is no secret that sperm quality has been plummeting in recent times; over 50% the last 50 years! Heat, unhealthy lifestyle habits, and environmental toxins contribute to this worsening fertility crisis; however, one key factor remains relatively unknown.

What are we missing?

Male fertility is intersecting with a two-headed monster:

1) the rise and increasing use of consumer electronics, and

2) development of wireless technologies like WiFi routers, cell phone towers, and soon space satellites which would enable connection virtually anywhere on Earth.

Electronic devices use energy waves, or electromagnetic radiation (“EMR”), to send and receive data wirelessly to/from other devices and to/from the cloud. Device antennas encode these bits of information (data) on light waves, albeit invisible to the human eye, at the microwave level identical to the microwaves used to rapidly cook food (just at a much lower power).

Dr. Ashok Aggarwal, Director of Research at the American Center for Reproductive Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic and the #1 ranked author in male fertility, has conducted extensive research on this issue over the last 10 years and his studies show that EMR is strongly associated with decreases in sperm count, motility, viability and normal morphology, and DNA damage on the sperm. Furthermore, nearly 100 other studies dating back to 1972, including by the Naval Medical Research Institute, also show EMR’s negative effects on fertility.

How is men’s fertility affected?

EMR absorbed by the scrotum disrupts functioning of testicular cells, causing abnormal calcium activity within cells. Mitochondria in cells respond by producing reactive oxygen species which results in oxidative stress, less antioxidant activity, more free radicals and premature cell death.

Over time, tissues and structures become damaged resulting in reduced testosterone production; reduced sperm counts, motility, morphology, and viability; and DNA damage on the sperm - increasing the risk of birth defects like cancer and even autism.

Given the vulnerability of the scrotum, sensitivity of testicular tissues, and time exposed to EMR, modern technologies have been wreaking havoc on man’s ability to produce robust, healthy sperm.

It’s not just cell phones cooking your balls!

Remember it’s not just when phones are carried in pockets that we expose our balls to harmful levels of radiation; it’s also from:

  • tablet, laptop, and PC use,
  • phone use while texting or using apps,
  • connected wearables like watches and rings,
  • radiation from car dashboards, and
  • video game remote controllers.

While studies show EMR emitted by devices using 4G and prior generation wireless technologies harming fertility, very little research has been done on the impact of next generation wireless technology networks. To keep up with consumer demand for more information at faster download speeds, telecommunications companies have started to roll out new fifth generation (5G) wireless technologies - potentially increasing our exposures to EMR many times the current levels.

So what can we do about it?

Faraday’s has designed the first-ever underwear pouch which protects your balls. The Shieldtech pouch fabric is coated with silver and independently proven to attenuate over 99% of EMR. Shieldtech is also softer than the soft and breathable bamboo boxer brief fabric which surrounds the pouch, has thermodynamic properties keeping you cool when it’s hot and warm when it’s cold, and is anti-bacterial and fungal. Men looking to boost fertility, testosterone and even erectile function, should be wearing Faraday’s and minimizing their exposure to EMR every day.
